We do not accept the following types of waste at the landfill:

  • Biohazardous materials, such as needles, syringes and pharmaceuticals
  • Compressed gas cylinders, such as propane tanks, aerosol containers, fire extinguishers, butane and gas
  • Corrosives, such as batteries

Disposing a Mattress?

There are 3 ways you can dispose of your mattress at the landfill.

If you would like to dispose of it for free you will be required to disassemble it before dropping it off.
The metal components go to the scrap metal recycling.
Remaining fabric/foam will go into the resident’s 2 free bags at landfill.
Disassembly only requires a box cutter and a hammer or mallet.

Follow the link to watch a short video on how to disassemble a mattress. https://youtu.be/8sQwk2_Xp44

The components inside of mattresses are almost all reusable.  See the diagram below for suggestions of applications to reuse the mattress components.

Mattress Recycling

If you choose to dispose of it at the landfill without disassembling there will be a fee of $50.
This fee is charged to cover the additional capacity mattresses take up in the landfill (%400 more) and additional handling required. It is time consuming and labour intensive to handle mattresses that have not been disassembled as they are designed to resist compaction and trap landfill leachate.

Electronic Waste (E-waste)

Electronics should never be put in the Blue Bin (recycling) or garbage. The Town of Blind River collects unwanted electronics for free to ensure they are disposed of safely, recycled and kept out of landfill. E-waste can be disposed of at no cost at the Blind River Landfill. There is a sea container designated for disposal of this waste stream. See below to determine if your waste is accepted.
