Recommended Strategic Five Year Plan of Ecological Committee for a Greener & Cleaner Community

The Mandate of the Ecological Resource Committee is to make Blind River a Greener Community.  The Committee’s role is to advise Council on Environmental issues and to encourage and support environmentally friendly practise throughout the community.

  • Effective May 1, 2012 Two (2) bags of garbage can be placed at the curb or roadside without bag tags. All other bags of garbage must be tagged for pick-up.
  • $2.00 bag tags are available at the Municipal Office, 11 Hudson Street, Blind River
  • Note that the assumed Garbage bag size is 26” X 36” (regular residential size garbage bag) with a maximum weight of 40 pounds.
  • A maximum of 3 regular sized garbage bags may be deposited at the Municipal Waste Disposal site during regular site open hours, without charge.

Additional tags can be purchased for $2.00 at the Town Hall

The Ecological Resource Committee reviews policies and procedures concerning all aspects of waste management including garbage and blue box pickup and hazardous waste programs. The committee sponsors the "Community Clean Up Day", "Bulk Pickup Days", "Recycling Days", and "Household Hazardous Waste Day"

Community Clean Up Day

Community Clean Up Day is an annual event sponsored by The Town of Blind River to help beautify the community and to reduce the amount of random garbage. In order to maximize participation and turnout the date is selected in consultation with local schools, community groups, companies, and the public at large. The group canvasses the parks, public and some private property, local streets and the highway. Bags are provided for and picked up for proper disposal by the Committee. If you would like to participate in the next "Community Clean Up Day" please contact the Town Hall at 705-356-2251 for times and dates.

Bulk Pickup Days

Bulk Pickup Days are pre-selected days each month. The Town of Blind River's waste management contractor will pick up non-household waste. Simply place your items at the curbside before the scheduled pick up day.  To find out the next bulk pickup date you can visit the local events calendar of this website or you can call Town Hall at 705-356-2251.

Recycling Day

Recycling Day in Blind River is every Thursday alternate from plastic, glass and metal one week and paper/cardboard the following week. For more information on what products are considered recyclable call Town Hall at 705-356-2251 or the waste management contractor at 705-356-4118.

Recycling Calendar

Hazardous Waste Disposal Day

Every two years the Town of Blind River designates a day where citizens can drop off items considered hazardous wastes. The majority of items include: batteries, paint cans, aerosol cans, oil can, used oil and contaminated gas products. Neighbouring municipalities are invited to participate and help share some of the costs.

Landfill Site

As of 2007 the land fill site has capacity to absorb another 10 years of waste, if current practices and amounts are maintained. The cost to the tax payer to close the existing site and open a new one can be measured in the millions of dollars.  If you would like to get involved in this very important endeavour please consider submitting your name as a volunteer on the Ecological Resource Committee.

Waste Disposal By-Law 2009

If you would like more information on what you can do to help Blind River reduce-reuse and recycle, call the Town Hall at 705-356-2251 or come to our next regular meeting.
